Heart disease has been the number one killer
of women since 1984. Walking, or other regular aerobic
exercise, a diet low in fat and regular check ups are key to
a heart healthy lifestyle.
The Akron General Heart & Vascular Center
offers these tips for a heart healthy diet you can combine
with your walking program:
Avoid or limit:
- Saturated fats found in full fat
dairy products, solid shortenings, meats and tropical
oils.
- Cholesterol found in eggs and some
baked goods.
- Trans-fatty acids found in some baked
goods, vegetable oils and fried foods.
- Salt found in snack foods, processed
meats and canned vegetables.
Choose:
- Low-fat dairy products or non-fat
milk and yogurt.
- Raw or steamed vegetables prepared
without oils, sauces or salt.
- Dark green and deep yellow
vegetables, like broccoli, spinach and romaine lettuce.
- Whole-grain breads, bagels, muffins
and pita.
- Brown rice, whole-grain flours and
bulgar when cooking.
- Fresh fruits which are higher in
fiber.
