Have an aversion
to or tired of lifting weights but still want the benefits
of increased muscle strength and tone, lean body mass, and
better bone density? The use of resistance bands are
becoming more and more popular and not just for rehab or
seniors.
The simple rule
to build and maintain muscle is to make your muscles work
harder than they normally do. Naturally, as you progress,
that workload increases and thus you need to increase the
resistance by increasing the tension and/or size of the
band, repetitions and sets, just like in weight training.
Resistance bands are low in cost, easy to store and use.
Another plus is that the resistance in the bands strengthen
the stabilizer muscles surrounding the joint (ankle, knee,
shoulder, etc.) you’re exercising and can enhance
flexibility.
Whether you’re
changing your routine for summer with more aerobic or other
outdoor activities (golfing, hiking, swimming…) or looking
for something different, resistance bands can be a good
alternative.
