People often ask, “What’s the best exercise for weight loss?” Many people are ready to sell you a program promising weight loss, but is there a “best” exercise for weight control?

Although some exercises burn more calories per minute (i.e., higher intensity) and some burn a higher percentage of calories from fat (i.e., lower intensity), the best exercise for weight control and overall health is exercise that is performed consistently. The same can be said about diet. You need to establish healthy habits that you can stick with for life.

To find what works for you, experts suggest you start with realistic goals, track your progress, build a support system, regularly reassess and adapt, have some fun, and of course always monitor and balance eating. Faced with the abundance of choices in our society, be persistent with those healthy habits and make healthy living a part of your daily life (ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal, 2005).
