Employee health and wellness programs can
take many forms. Exercise classes, educational information,
Weight Watchers, blood pressure testing, health fairs,
smoking cessation programs, brown bag lunches and so many
other activities. The missing element a typical employee
health program is accountability.
When you offer health related programs,
how do you know employees will actually change their
behavior? The Health Initiative Project presents a
comprehensive, coordinated employee health program which
holds employee participants accountable for results.
That is the difference between activity
and results. Use our experience to make your employee health
and wellness program accountable for results.
Over the next weeks, we will consider the
significant health costs American businesses face. Premiums
have been increasing significantly over the last few years.
We must understand what drivers these
costs:
- participant experience
- demographics
- and illnesses related to the
lifestyles we live
We will explore these cost drivers and
what you can do about it in more detail throughout the
summer at Get Fit Akron!
The Health Initiative Project is
an Effective Approach to Wellness
The Health Initiative Project is a
coordinated work-based approach to wellness that ties
several elements together to get results. The project is
from 4 to 6 months long and includes:
- seminars on nutrition and fitness,
- periodic newsletters to build
enthusiasm and share information,
- health assessments to measure
progress both individually and as a business,
- and training for activities.
The goal is to become a healthier work
culture.
These programs bring high enthusiasm, good
participation, and results. The size of results depends on
support from business leadership and support. That gets back
to “walk the talk”.
Employees need to participate. We
recommend that you use some tools to share what you’ve
learned and what you plan for the future. We like
newsletters and employee meetings but you should use
communication methods that fit your employee culture.
Some companies have had success with focus
groups and internal committees to give input into activities
that would be interesting to employees. Health fairs are a
good way to share information and get employees involved.
